post-hallow’s eve gratitude

i am grateful for:

1) wishful drinking with carrie fisher. so damn good. really great stuff about mental illness and psycho families and, of, course, leia. and how it reminds me of the one-woman show i need to write.

2) my mom, for taking us

3) throwing together a last-minute costume that did exactly what halloween costumes, in my mind, should do: brought out a secret part of me that wanted to play.

4) my gigantic third eye and how it made people respond to me differently. it started with the hindi guy at a bodgea asking “are you lord shiva?” and me, abashed to be bastardizing his religion with a googly eye and favor-flav-sized om, “no i’m super-yogi!” and him, not missing a beat “that is the same as lord shiva.” and him reaching behind the counter and giving me halloween candy (a baby packet of skittles and a “paint your tongue” lolipop. yum.) you know, i see the appeal of wearing a habit or some other loudly signifying religious or spiritual garb. for someone spiritually inclined it gets you in many more interesting spiritual conversations that you would not otherwise have. cuts the small-talk.

5) the support i’ve got in my life. thanks, net o love.

6) that i realized partly why i’m such a basketcase lately: bi-annual testing time in three weeks. sigh. no scans. just blood taken and prodding given. and going to the building filled only with poeple who have cancer and those who love and treat them.

7) chai

8) the kitchen at any party

9) seeing people wander around the city in costumes. lots of adult sesame street characters amongst the french maids and vampires.

10) the yummy mast brothers chocolate from e.

11) broadway

12) the leaves, now ankle deep in spots, crunchy, orange, everywhere. and how it’s cold but not too-too. and just how it’s fall. such a juicy moment.

13) still having a visible third eye, later
